Salat-ul-Istikhara

What is Istikhara?
Literally, "Istikhara" means to seek goodness from Allah. When a muslim intends to do something important and does not know whether it is good or bad for him or one is hesitant in making a decision, then one should seek Allah's help through Istikhara. Doing istikhara
is like requesting Allah Almighty that, "O the Knower of Unseen, guide me whethere this thing is better for me or not and if its good for me then help me accomplish it."
Who Can Perform Istikhara?
Just like all other types of salat , Istikara prayer can be offered by any muslim. Conditions which apply for all other types of salat (namaz) are applicable to salat istikhara as well. According to the ahadith, it is known that the person in need should perform Istikharah himself. That is, it is a form of worship, prayer, or invocation that should basically be done in person by any individual or family in need. Family members can do Istikharah for each other.
If at all you have to ask some one to do Istikhara for you, then it must be a pious person or at least someone who is regularly offering his / her five daily obligatory prayers.
The Significance and Reality of Istikharah
Beside the daily obligatory prayers (salat / namaz ), Rasool Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) himself taught many voluntary prayers. Salat-al-Istikhara (namaz-e-istikhara) is one of those many volubtary forms of salat (nafali namaz).
According to hadith:
[Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah : Rasool Allah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara in all matters, just as he taught us the Suras of the Quran. Rassol Allah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam) said, "If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two Rakat salat other than the obligatory (farz) ones and say this supplication (dua).........(text of supplication (dua) is included under the next heading) "]

How to Perform Salat-ul-Istikhara
The best time for istikharah is at night, afters Ishaa and before going to bed, in a solitary and quite environment. The method is as follows:
1. Perform ablution first.
2. Offer two raka’ Nawafil with the Niyah of Salat-ul-Istikhara. After Surah Fatiha (Allhamd…) preferably recite Surah al-Kafirun (Surah 109) in the first raka’ and Surah al-Ikhlas (Surah 112) in the second Raka’. If you do not remember Surah Al-Kafirun, then recite Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) in both rak'ahs.
3. After salam, raise your hands in the same manner for the du'aa 'and recite the following du'aa' (in Arabic).
4. In prayer, when one comes to the words of "this matter", then one should present his need before Allah, that is, to mention or think of the need or wish.
5. If you are do not feel content or satisfied with the dua once, then repeat it. Because Rasool Allah (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam) himself has encouraged us to repeat all suppkication (duas) three times.
6. Conclude your dua with salawat (durood) upon Rasool Allah, (Allah's blessings and Peace be upon him). It is preferable to recite salawat (darood) , before and after the above dua (supplication).
7. After the salat sleep with ablution (wuddu). Remember that the masnoon way to sleep is to sleep on the right side facing the Qibla.
This is the correct method of Istikharah which we have described above. Other than that, any method that someone has adopted has no validity in Shari'ah. Online Istikhara, paid or free istikhara by so called spiritual healers (urdu: Amil) for others have no reality in sharia. The istikhara taught by Rasool Allah (Allah's blessings and Peace be upon him) is done by an individual for a songle matter. How can a single healer (urdu: Amil) do istikhara for many persons, on many matters at one time. Therefore all such practices are false and baseless.
Istikharah for How Many Days?
Sometimes it takes only one night to get the answer, but sometimes it may take longer. According to the masnoon way, it is better ito for seven nights. If you receive an answer earlier, stop doing it further and there is no compulsion to complete seven nights.
How Istikhara is Answered?
Firstly, the answer to Istikharah is usually found in a dream. Secondly, its answered in the form of a solemn thought or strong feeling which one should follow after seven nights. Thirdly, the answer to one’s istikhara is neither shown in a dreams, nor in feelings; instead Allah makes the right things easy, and unfolds events in a way which leads to the decision in which there is real goodness and khair.
Lastly, one needs to be patient in terms of receiving the answer to their prayers.
